What is Base64?
Base64 is a way to represent binary data using only 64 safe ASCII characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, +, /, plus = for padding). It's everywhere: data URLs in CSS, email attachments, API tokens, and embedding small assets directly in code.
Encoding is not encryption
Worth repeating: Base64 provides zero security. It's trivially reversible by design — its job is compatibility, not secrecy. Never "protect" a password or API key by Base64-encoding it.

No. Base64 is an encoding scheme, not encryption — anyone can decode it instantly. Never use it to protect secrets; use real encryption instead.
Why does Base64 output sometimes end with = signs?
The
= characters are padding. Base64 works on 3-byte groups, so when the input length is not a multiple of 3, padding is added to fill the final 4-character block.Does my text leave my browser?
